Each morning, right after switching on the coffee machine, we make it a habit to check the weather forecast. Last Thursday, after noticing what seemed like the arrival of a calm spell, the frustration of a disappointing summer, along with a desire for a bit of adventure, prompted us to plan a trip across the Bristol Channel. A quick look at the map pointed us to Ilfracombe, a place we hadn’t yet visited by sea—and as luck would have it, there was a maritime festival taking place.

The following morning, the conditions were ideal. Mike set off mid-afternoon, making it to Ilfracombe in just over two and a half hours on a smooth sea. Unfortunately, a sea trial delayed my departure (work commitments always come first), so a friend and I set out early the next morning.

The crossing was a little more challenging than expected, as we committed to five hours of variable force 5-6 conditions. However, the Zodiac RIB we took, handled it remarkably well, proving its excellent build quality and sea-keeping performance.

Once safely docked (thanks to the friendly harbourmaster), we checked into our hotel and took some time to explore the picturesque harbour. The evening ended with a well-earned drink at the yacht club, which boasts stunning views of both the harbour and the rugged North Devon coastline. While there, we had a chance meeting with the vice commodore, who had noticed one of the boats we have listed for sale. After some conversation about boats, we exchanged details and spent the evening enjoying live music, good food, and a few more pints.

The next day, we returned to Pembrokeshire, only to find an email from our new acquaintance in Ilfracombe—he had decided to purchase the Yacht we had listed and would be visiting soon to see his new boat in person! Boats sold, friends made, great result.

It was a fantastic little adventure, and next on the horizon (pun intended) is a trip to Padstow!
