Sails

Mainsail Doyle - Roller boom (2006)
Headsail - Furling (2006)

Furling Systems redesigned by owner and Forespar to enable all sail handling from cockpit. Jib is on a Profurl NC 42.
Mainsail is custom in-boom furling.
Upper bearing of mast is Vasconite.
Lower bearing custom bronze ball with central hole. Grease points for both bearings.
Main halyard, main furling line, jib halyard are Spectra line.
Single Jib sheet, jib furling line, main halyard, main furling line pass into mast, down through center of bronze ball and back up to cabin top, then to cockpit.
Jib lines to manual winch port side. Mainsail lines to electric winch starboard side with thermal cut out switch. Never need to leave the cockpit to manage sails or rig.
3 x Sheet winches Andersen 46 ( one on the boom for the jib halyard, spare main sheet and boom/ forestay tensioner. Port cabin top Andersen 46 manual for jib lines. Starboard cabin top Andersen 46 Electric for mainsail and main sheet.

5 batten Mainsail 77 sq.m Doyle DYS 14 Plus.
The owner says about the Aero Rig :-
"I would NEVER buy a boat again with a " standard " rig. It is totally stupid. It works out more expensive if amortised over 10 years with all the replacements needed re sails and rigging both running and fixed. On my 33" Prout I counted 56 places on the rig any one of which of which could fail and cause the mast to drop. When did you last see a plane with its wings held up by wire!!!!!. The best way to convince a skeptic is to go for a sail in 20 knots. Tack or jibe you never touch ANY lines. Sail dead down wind and the sail is not collapsing like a spinnaker. Put the wheel hard over and walk away. The boat will continue to sail in a circle for ever!!. We went sailing off CapeTown with a sister ship with a standard Marconi rig. I did a 720 turn before he completed 1 tack and he had 5 crew!!. I did not need anybody as there is nothing to do!!

Construction

Construction Composite
Underwater profile Multihull
Finish Gelcoat finish

AeroRig 360 designed by Carbospars and built by Forespar. Mast and boom made from T300 carbon. Reinforcement in lower mast with T 800 carbon 30mm thick.
8 layers of fiberglass and polyester resin over 30mm CoreCell. Deck is reinforced with carbon radiating out to hulls to a strength of 23 Tons. The under bridgedeck is reinforced with carbon to 26 tons as specified by Carbospars to support mast bearings. This makes a very stiff boat with no hull twist as seen in production catamarans. Mini Keels, Kevlar on keel base. Skeg hung rudders
Bows below water line are separated from hulls by intact bulk head.
All thru hulls have Marelon lever shut off valves with attached wooden pegs.
Starboard forward bilge has retractable knotmeter fitted inside sealed bucket so knotmeter can be removed without water entering bilge.
Bilges totally accessible via easy lift up flooring.
Hull bilges separate from engine compartment bilges.
4 Automatic bilge pumps one in each compartment with extra manual switch.
Manual Whale Titan Gusher pump in each hull.
Manual portable pump with 6’ hose.
Fuel Tank system:
Custom S/S tanks in both hulls. Each has small circular access for a measuring dip stick (1 stick for water and 1 for Diesel). Each tank has large removable top for easy cleaning access.
New Wema electric tank gauges for all tanks. Cross over electric pump in both directions for Diesel tanks. (2X70 US gals. – 267 litres X 2.) Biosorb added at each tank refill. Doubtful fuel supply run through dirt / H2O separator funnel.
Tanks drained and cleaned by owners July 2010
185L extra fuel can be carried in portable fuel containers that fit inside cockpit floor lockers. This will give a 1000 NM range depending on sea conditions and correct speed.
Water System:
Custom SS tanks as above. Port 56 US gals. – 214 litres, Starboard 98 US gals. – 370 litres
By-pass switch in port head to allow transfer from stbd to port tank.
Tanks drained and cleaned by owners July 2010
Heat shield ( as used by NASA to line the living areas of manned spacecraft ) lines the roof of all the living areas, both hulls and all the saloon. Not expensive, but expensive to install. The Heat Shield must not touch the roof or the lining inside. Hence a framework must be built. Heat Shield reflects 99% of heat or keeps warmth in. All living areas use 1/4" Heat Shield. Fridge lined with 2 layers of 1" thick Heat Shield. Freezer has the same PLUS 1" styrofoam.

Broker's Comments

This Alex Simonis designed ( Four Cats 53' ) is a unique luxury catamaran needing only the addition of fuel for the new owners to sail on her next ocean passage. ( the owners have achieved a max speed under sail of 17 knots. Average sailing in 20 knots broad reach 13 knots )
The interior, all equipment and appliances were chosen by the owners to give maximum comfort at anchor or at sea. Numerous extras were added to give ease of handling and maintenance.
The Aero Rig enables easy single-handed sailing in any weather without leaving the cockpit. The owner has the following to say:
" Once in the Indian ocean we had a sudden wind change which I missed and we did a chinese gibe in 43 knots with all sails up. No damage. In the doldrums off the Amazon we had the full main up and no jib, In the night we got hit by a typical local storm with horizontal rain. The seas were flat and the radar showed it should pass in 5 minutes. So I turned from a broad reach to dead downwind expecting it to pass. The autopilot had no trouble in controlling her ( it has never failed to control her because it is oversize ). We were doing 15 Knots and the wind over her was 47 knots. ie total 62 knots of wind. It lasted for an hour over us as we were going so fast. No adverse effects. Try that on a Lagoon!! "
She is currently being actively sailed by her owners. All equipment, tools and spares needed for sailing in remote regions are included in her sale.
A survey on July 26, 2009 for 10-year insurance renewal showed no recommendations for any equipment or part of the boat. She has duel instruments in cockpit and forward facing nav. area. Apart from sail size changes the boat can be sailed and controlled from inside with a 360* visibility. the Aero Rig gives perfect visibility forwards as foreboom is high and there is no jib obstruction.
Detailed lists of each locker contents and all spare parts and tools are available.
She has been examined by the presidents of 2 large catamaran construction companies and described as the finest catamaran of her type and purpose that they have seen. One added that the boat was a “decadent use of space”. She has enabled her owners to sail 50,000 NM over 11 years in complete luxury, comfort, and without fear in any condition.
Only the realization that age is creeping upon the owners is stimulating a sale – with reluctance!!.
THE STORY BEHIND THE BOAT
"We had owned a Prout 33’ catamaran for 7 years and had sailed her 15,000NM. We had always planned to retire early and sail round the world. For comfort we wanted a larger boat, about a 45’ catamaran. We could not find a production company that would install an AeroRig (with its necessary hull reinforcement) and customize the interior the way we wanted it. We realized we needed a custom boat built. During enquiries Alex Simonis said that he had designed a 52’ catamaran for 4 gentlemen in South Africa. Each would be different and have a 20 ton loaded weight. As one of the gentlemen had just dropped out Alex suggested I go to Cape Town to look. I had already designed in detail the interior we wanted and all the equipment. (We had learned a lot from our Prout 33 and I and had been to the Miami Boat Show for 6 years and had copied the best ideas from various boats). Having seen my plans for the interior, Alex said they would require no adaption and, since we were using so little space, he moved the engines forward from the lazerette, kept the bows empty thus diminishing the normal catamaran hobby horse effect. Work started in December 1998 and she was launched in December 1999.
After 11 years and 53,000NM and 48 countries, we find that we would, retrospectively, make no changes. She is safe, comfortable and a delightful full time home."
